Open Mobile Summit London - 10-11th June – 9 weeks to go!
…………………………………………………………………………………………

The London summit is 9 weeks away and the buzz is mounting!

Since the agenda went live online (http://www.openmobilesummit.com/agenda.aspx) a couple of weeks ago we’ve had an incredible reaction.

Comparing the response to our first event in San Francisco last November, London is set to sell out many weeks in advance.

I’m personally very excited about this as it demonstrates that there is plenty of life in this sector. Clearly many business leaders are determined to continue to identify opportunities to partner and profit, despite the more challenging economic climate, which is good news for us all.

Please note the agenda is now full – there are no remaining speaking positions. We are only accepting paid attendees from this point onwards. We have capped the attendance at 200 to facilitate strong networking so if you are planning to attend, make the decision soon. Note also our early bird discount expires 1 May, which offers a 300 pound saving.

The event is taking place at the Thistle Marble Arch on 10-11 June.

* Welcome to our sponsors *

I’d like also to welcome our sponsors for the London event: ACCESS, Analysys Mason and Qualcomm are all supporting the event as Gold sponsors. Amdocs Interactive are a Silver sponsor and Opera will be demo-ing.

There is just one demo area remaining now – if you’re interested – let me know.

* Focus: Beyond the Phone

One of the most interesting aspects of open mobile at the moment is the evolution of the device landscape. And the ‘Beyond the Phone’ markets in particular as they are demonstrating continued growth. Whilst handset OEMs are suffering the world-over, iPhone sales continue to grow. For others from the PC world, the MID (Mobile Internet Device) marketplace is driving growth in slower economic times.

Lots of interesting dynamics here. One is the convergence of PC and Handset OEM’s universe. There are clearly going to be some casualties here. The plenary session on June 11th at Open Mobile Summit London ‘Beyond the Phone’ explores the changing dynamics of the device marketplace from this angle.

Aymar de Lenquesaing head of Acer’s new handheld business unit will join Jin Sung Choi, VP at LG Electronics, Enrico Salvatori of Qualcomm Europe, Yves Maitre SVP Devices at Orange / France Telecom and Nabeel Mardi who heads up devices at T-Mobile. Rajeev Chand from Rutberg & Co is moderating.

Meanwhile, these new form factors are creating new revenue opportunities for operators and driving mobile broadband growth. Matt Hatton from Analysys Mason will be sharing data from his brand new report on device evolution, including market sizing data. How big is the revenue potential for these new form factors?

Finally, there’s the potential to connect billions of other existing devices, which promises to open up new markets for application and services the world over.

The ebook is a good example – Ian Freed from Amazon joined us in San Francisco last year to share stories of the Kindle’s remarkable success in the North American marketplace, which continues unabated. So what’s next?

Here’s my view.

I think connected cameras and video cameras are a clear market opportunity for hassle free photo and video sharing.

And handheld gaming consoles offer enormous potential as connected entertainment devices. (Although though I’m not sure why the early WiFi experiments with the PSP and DS Lite didn’t get more traction – can anyone enlighten me?)

Connected fridges is not something I buy into. Sorry.

However, I do like the idea of the mobile as a remote control. To set my TV to record a programme whilst I’m out. Or perhaps even to turn off my oven, to stop the roast burning when a quick pint turns into two on a Sunday afternoon.

At Open Mobile Summit London, the InterConnected Entertainment panel looks at some of the possibilities when you connect the screens of life – not just to the Internet, but to each other.

Beyond the Phone / Connected Electronics will continue to be a key theme at our Fall event in San Francisco, and we are actively recruiting speakers for this event now, so if you have any insights to share please let me know.

* Open Mobile World San Francisco: Mark your calendar

The second annual San Francisco event will be happening November 17-18 in downtown San Francisco. Mark your calendar!

Branded as Open Mobile World, in San Francisco we are launching ‘The deal-space’ alongside the Summit conference. This is an integrated networking environment and demo area in the foyer outside of the conference rooms.

Many attendees have actively requested that we feature tools, innovations and solutions that can help enable the open mobile ecosystem. And as the Open Mobile events are about creating a tight knit networking environment, we have chosen not to go the all signing, all dancing ‘Expo’ route, but rather to integrate demo companies into the existing networking environment.

ACCESS are on board as our first Gold sponsor and demo company, and we expect to announce many more now that the dates for the San Francisco event have been confirmed. Watch this space!

* Soapbox *

It’s going to be a short one this month because the newsletter is already way too long.

But I’m tired of people whining about the economy. And waiting for it to ‘get better’.

I don’t mean we should stifle or ignore the realities of the business climate. But I think it’s really dangerous to sit on our hands waiting for consultants / economists to announce that it’s sate to get back in the water.

It isn’t going to ‘get better’ overnight. This is the new business environment. Adapt to the new state of play, and move on.

Secondly, like the English and the weather, don’t just talk about something for the sake of it.

Let me give you an example of what I mean. I spent 3 fantastic days at the Mobile World Congress in February. Many tens of thousands of people turned out for the annual industry gathering, thousands of dollars, euros, pounds were spent on booths, hotels, flights, entertainment. And some really great products and industry initiatives were launched. Yet some folks still opened conversations with a sigh, a knowing look, and the comment ‘much smaller than last year isn’t it?’

As my mother used to say ‘if you haven’t got anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all’.

* And finally…..openmobilemedia is now on twitter – follow us!

That’s all for this month. Thanks for reading. Feedback welcomed – write to me at robin@openmobilemedia.com

Oh – and Happy Easter, or Chag Semeach, to those to whom that relates!
